What Are We Singing?!?

"Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills, and everywhere; go, tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born!"

This morning I had the privilege of witnessing AJ's first musical performance! The children at Child's Day Out performed a musical for the parents, and it was quite entertaining as you can imagine. The children sang new songs that were unfamiliar, as well as a few classic songs that allowed parents to reminisce of Christmas's past. During one song in particular, "Go, Tell It on the Mountain," I began to think about a conversation I had with the College and Career class yesterday. We sing songs, but do we ever stop to actually pay attention to what we are singing??

Yesterday in Sunday School, I asked my class how many of the class attended the 9:30am worship service, a few hands were raised. I then asked how many were familiar with the Christmas songs we sang, most of the hands remained raised. Then I asked, "how many of you actually paid attention to what you were singing about on those Christmas songs?" Hands dropped. Certain songs have become so much of our tradition that we stop listening to what we are professing and focus more on the feeling of nostalgia and warm memories that have replaced our proclamation.

The children this morning were not just singing a familiar old song to me that brought back memories of my childhood and fond memories for the many parents and family members in attendance, they were proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord and reminding us that we are to tell everyone, everywhere! As we continue to celebrate this time of year, let us not forget our ultimate mission, to fulfill the Great Commission (Matt 28:16-20)! What are we singing? We are singing "Our Savior has come! He has come to seek and to save the lost!"

Luke 19:10 - "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost."

Video of Shane and Shane singing "Go Tell It On the Mountain":

Go Tell It on the Mountain - Shane and Shane

While shepherds kept their watching Over silent flocks by night, Behold throughout the heavens, There shone a holy light: The shepherds feared and trembled When lo! above the earth Rang out the angel chorus

That hailed our Saviour's birth That hailed our Saviour's birth:

Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. Down in a lowly manger Our humble Christ was born And God sends us salvation, That blessed Christmas morn:

Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born.

Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. He made me a watchman Upon the city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least of all.

I am the least of all.

Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born.

Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born.
